Description

Built in 1896, Aberfeldy is one of the sweeter Highland malts, producing a gutsy, honeyed apricot style of whisky. Distillery bottlings tend to lean towards the American Oak ex-bourbon style and the whisky is a core component of the Dewar’s blend (in fact, Aberfeldy Distillery hosts the Dewar’s Experience). This spirit is filled into a Re-Charred ex-bourbon hogshead (known as STR in the industry – shaved, toasted, re-charred), exposing the oak and getting right into the natural vanilla, light spice and citrus extractives of the wood. On the delicate nose it releases aromas of fresh baked flaky pastries, lemon blossom and fresh cut grass. On the palate you taste the following aromas: Dry peppery oak at first as the wood announces itself. Then lemon drizzle cake, white chocolate with a dusting of icing sugar and allspice. It is a very easy drinker. Fresh and light rather than bold and lingering. Some dried apricot and ripe nectarine sweetness are the main characteristic of the attractive aftertaste.

Bonnington, who lives in the heart of Edinburgh, can look back on a career in whisky spanning almost two decades. For over 10 years he was responsible at Edrington for brands such as the Macallan and Highland Park.

Highlands: Clans, Schafe, Whiskys

Scotland – Wild history, warming whisky

Whiskey, bagpipes, kilts – These are the most famous elements of Scottish culture. It has not been conclusively determined who invented whisky. The Scots and Irish both argue that they invented the “water of life.” Food and drink definitely tops the Scottish export categories. Every second, around 40 bottles of whisky are purchased. So it’s hardly surprising that whisky makes up around 80 percent of total food and drink exports.
