Description

Nero d’Avola is the undisputed queen of Sicily and the island’s most widely grown grape variety. It thrives best where there is plenty of sunshine. No wonder, then, that it now shapes the wine landscape of the whole of southern Italy. The grapes for this organically produced Nero d’Avola from Villa Carumè come from the vineyards around Mazara del Vallo, where sunshine, the Mediterranean climate and proximity to the sea create the ideal conditions for its fruity and approachable character. The bouquet delights with intense aromas of ripe red fruit and a hint of liquorice. On the palate, the wine is round, smooth and well-balanced, with a juicy, full-bodied fruitiness. It’s perfect with spicy lasagne, mature cheese, roasted meat and hearty potato dishes. Our tip: on warm days, it’s also a delight when served slightly chilled.

Villa Carumè – Assuli

Villa Carumè is situated between Mazara del Vallo and Trapani, where the wind blows in from the Mediterranean across the vineyards and the sun shines practically all year round. The vineyards benefit from a warm Mediterranean climate, plenty of sunshine and constant sea breezes. Here, wines are produced from typical Sicilian grape varieties such as Grillo and Nero d’Avola.

Behind Villa Carumè stands the Caruso family, which has been involved in viticulture in western Sicily for generations. The brand name pays homage to the family and emphasises the winery’s close connection to its origins and terroir. At the same time, Villa Carumè conveys this heritage in a youthful, playful and contemporary style.

The winery is housed in a renovated 18th-century baglio, where historic walls and modern cellar technology blend harmoniously. The focus is on meticulous work in the vineyard and precise winemaking, ensuring that each grape variety can develop its own character.

Nero d'Avola

The taste of Sicily

Nero d'Avola reigns supreme in Sicily as the most widely planted grape on the island. It was named after the town of Avola near Siracusa, and appeared in the writings of a botanist by 1696. At the time, however, he still called them “calavrisi”, in reference to their origin in Calabria. It undoubtedly likes the heat. In southern climates, it develops a seductive bouquet of plum and chocolate, good body and velvety tannins. At the same time, it has plenty of acidity, which gives it a great aging potential. Until 20 years ago, it was mainly incognito: it was used to give more colour to wines from Tuscany, Piedmont or the French Languedo. But since the 1990s, vintners have stood by it, and success has proven them right. Tip: these wines almost seem made for homemade lasagne and spaghetti Bolognese!

Sicily: more than a wine island

The largest island in the Mediterranean has a greater variety and history of wine to offer than many wine-growing countries. The focus of this interest rests on the full, fruity, yet well-structured wines from the long-neglected red Nero d'Avola variety, and on the wholesome Catarratto white wines. In addition, two legendary wines are experiencing a well-deserved renaissance: the liqueur wines from Marsala and the growths from Mount Etna, with their impressive crispness and complexity.

Italy – Where wine is a way of life

The Italian wine regions are extremely diverse, and this is made clear in their wines. Established varieties such as Merlot, Syrah, and Sauvignon can be found on just 15 percent of the total vine growing area. The remaining 85 percent is reserved for autochthonous, indigenous varieties. More than 2,000 different grape varieties are grown under diverse conditions and pressed with various techniques into wines that reach the top tier of the international wine market.
