Bodegas Olivares
In the transitional zone between the Mediterranean coast and the highlands of the Meseta Central, to the west of Alicante, lies the Jumilla Denominación de Origen. Here, the Monastrell grape variety reigns supreme, basking in 3,000 hours of sunshine a year whilst at the same time withstanding the scorching heat. Gentle breezes from the sea and the refreshing cool of the nights provide it with some relief.
Its small berries, with their thick, black-blue skin, ripen slowly and perfectly, particularly at higher altitudes from 650 metres above sea level with a northerly aspect. Yields under these conditions are anything but high. The grapes for the Altos de la Hoya come from the Finca Hoya de Santa Ana at 825 metres above sea level. These are the highest and freshest sites, which guarantee elegant, well-structured wines. It is interesting to note that the vines are all still ungrafted, i.e. not grafted.

Jumilla is one of the few regions in Europe to have been spared the phylloxera plague at the end of the 19th century. In this arid climate and on these sandy-loam soils, phylloxera stands no chance. This is what makes Jumilla – whose vineyards are amongst the oldest in the world – so unique. The oldest vines at Bodegas Olivares, from which a delicious sweet wine is produced, are over 130 years old! This winery, now run by the fourth generation of the family, cherishes this precious heritage. The pleasure of drinking such a wine is undoubtedly enhanced when one is aware of this special feature.
Producer
Bodega Palacios Remondo
He was born 'at home', right above his father's bodega – Álvaro Palacios, Spains star vintner. The scent of wine and barrels must have been lying in the air and thus dictated his further life. He studied oenology in Bordeaux and gathered professional experience at the Château Pétrus, and in London, Dublin, and California. Today, he owns vines in the Priorat county, in Bierzo, and at home in the Rioja, and proves his extraordinary talent with premium wines year after year.
G. & J. Guillerault / Sebastian Fargette
Gilles Guillerault and Sébastien Fargette are based in Crézancy-en-Sancerre, a few kilometres west of Sancerre, in the Centre-Loire region. A lovely hilly landscape where vineyards alternate with charming villages. With around 2400 hectares of vineyards, Sancerre is a rather small wine-growing region. Only two grape varieties are cultivated, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.
Brivio / Gialdi
For most of wine lovers in Switzerland, the name Guido Brivio is no unknown. However, abroad, it is a different story. Only after many years in the trade has he become among the wine experts and professionals of New York or London an insider tip, so to say, from an infinitesimally tiny unknown corner in the great international wine world.
