Souzão

Already bewitches the eye

This ancient autochthonous red wine comes from northern Portugal. It was long assumed that Souza was an independent vine variety; genetic study, however, has shown that the Souzão and Vinhao varieties are identical.

The berries were valued as early as 1790 in Duro for their intense color, and they were particularly used to provide a dark color to port wine. They are seldom developed as varietal wines.

As time passed, Souzão found its way overseas as well: it is particularly appreciated in South Africa, but it also now calls California and Australia home.
